City of Flint Named to Federal Initiative

The City of Flint was informed of its selection as one of seven communities around the nation to participate in the Strong Cities, Strong Communities program. The SC2 program aims to assist cities more effectively invest existing resources, provide advice and expertise, better align federal programs and investments, and facilitate new partnerships wherever possible. Federal staff will become embedded within the City's Planning and Development Department to focus on Master Plan implementation. More information can be found here.

Grand Traverse Greenway Trail Community Visioning Session

This Imagine Flint demonstration project will facilitate the design of a 3-mile stretch of former rail line running from Grand Traverse and Kearsley Streets near Downtown Flint south to Hemphill Road. It will link with the Flint River and Flint River Trail while providing residents and community members the opportunity for new recreational opportunities and increased healthy lifestyle options. The community visioning session will allow residents the opportunity to envision what connection points, destination areas, and trail design would be ideal while forming the blueprint for design charrettes in March 2014.

 

The session will be on Thursday, January 9 from 5-7 pm at Word of Life Church. 420 W. Atherton Rd.

Help Design the Greenway!

The first, in a series of multiple community meetings will take place this week discussing the Grand Traverse Greenway Trail project. A community visioning session will be held at the Word of Life Church to provide Flint residents and community members the opportunity to "plug-into" this project. Multiple design meetings will follow in March.

City of Flint Selected as a PlacePlans Community

The City of Flint was awarded a technical assistance PlacePlans grant to aid in the design of the Grand Traverse Greenway Trail. The PlacePlans project is a collaboration between the Michigan Municipal League and Michigan State University that provides transformation placemaking projects. The development of the Greenway Trail is a top priority in the Transportation and Mobility section of the Imagine Flint Master Plan, while promoting alternative transportation modes that provide healthy lifestyle options for Flint residents. 

Flint is one of eight cities around the state to be awarded the grant. Generous matching support was provided by Diplomat Pharmacy, part of the S. Saginaw Task Force group that engages in programming and opportunity to create a more vibrant S.Saginaw corridor.

Imagine Flint Staff Awarded Grant for Park Naturalization Project

The City of Flint Planning Staff was awarded a small grant from the Graham Sustainability Institute, University of Michigan, that focuses on a Master Plan implementation. The demonstration project will allow staff and Flint residents to work in Max Brandon Park focusing on naturalization techniques, increased access, and educational aspects for park goers. City staff along with the Friends of Max Brandon group, Salem Housing, the Crim Fitness Foundation and the Genesee County Conservation District will partner over the spring/summer months to implement strategies from the Environmental Features, Open Space, and Parks chapter of the plan.
